If stretching, massage, or temporary relief never seems to last, the problem may start higher in your neck than you think.
Neck pain is one of the most common complaints adults experience. It can show up as stiffness when you turn your head, tight muscles across your shoulders, discomfort at the base of your skull, headaches, or pain that seems to keep returning.
Sometimes the reason is obvious, such as a car accident, sports injury, or sleeping in an awkward position. Other times, neck pain develops gradually after years of poor posture, computer work, looking down at a phone, stress, or accumulated wear and tear. The important question is not only, “How do I make my neck feel better?” It is also, “Why does this keep happening?”

Why Neck Pain Can Keep Coming Back
When your neck hurts, it is natural to focus on the area where you feel the pain. Stretching, massage, heat, or other approaches may
help tight muscles feel better temporarily.
But recurring neck pain can sometimes involve something deeper than muscle tension. Your head sits on top of the atlas and axis, the top two bones in your neck. Because they form the foundation for the rest of the cervical spine, changes in their alignment can affect how your head, neck, and surrounding muscles function.
If the upper neck is misaligned, your body may compensate to keep your head level. Over time, that compensation can contribute to uneven muscle tension, stiffness, limited movement, headaches, and recurring discomfort
The Upper Cervical Difference
Upper cervical chiropractic focuses specifically on the alignment of the atlas and axis. Doctors use precise measurements and imaging to determine whether a correction is necessary and, if so, exactly how it should be made. Corrections are gentle and specific and do not require forceful twisting or cracking of the neck.
The goal is not simply to chase neck pain or other symptoms. Proper alignment of the upper neck supports normal brain to body communication through the nervous system, allowing the body to function as it was designed to. As balance and nervous system function improve, the body has an opportunity to adapt, stabilize, and heal naturally
Why Holding Your Correction Matters
The goal of upper cervical care is not to make the same correction at every visit. It is to help the body reach a more balanced position and hold it. When the correction holds, brain to body communication can function more efficiently, giving the nervous system time to adapt and the body time to heal.
That is why your doctor checks your alignment before making another correction. If the correction is holding, another one may not be needed. Fewer corrections can be a positive sign that your body is becoming more stable.
